Organic Intermediate

2-Isopropylnaphthalene (2-IPN)

CAS2027-17-0

2-Isopropylnaphthalene (2-IPN, CAS 2027-17-0) is a β-alkylated naphthalene (C13H14, MW 170.25) used as an intermediate in naphthalene chemistry. It is oxidized to its hydroperoxide and cleaved to 2-naphthol and acetone, and it is a step toward 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene, a precursor of the PEN monomer 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid. KingPharm supplies 2-IPN for R&D and production with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description

2-Isopropylnaphthalene is naphthalene carrying an isopropyl group at the 2 (β) position. It is a colorless liquid near room temperature, with a reported melting point of about 14 °C, and is typically made by isopropylation of naphthalene with propylene or isopropanol over acid catalysts.

Its value lies in the tertiary benzylic C–H of the isopropyl group. Liquid-phase air oxidation converts 2-IPN to 2-isopropylnaphthalene hydroperoxide, which is acid-decomposed into 2-naphthol and acetone, in the same way that cumene gives phenol. Further isopropylation at the other β position gives 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene, which is oxidized to 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid.

The hydroperoxide route gives 2-naphthol without the sulfonation and caustic fusion steps of the classical process, and it co-produces acetone. Starting from the β-isomer rather than mixed isopropylnaphthalenes helps direct the second alkylation toward the 2,6-substitution pattern.

For procurement, check the GC assay together with the content of 1-isopropylnaphthalene, residual naphthalene and di- or polyisopropylnaphthalenes, since these isomers and homologs carry through oxidation and alkylation steps. Because the melting point is close to room temperature, the material may solidify in cool storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 2-isopropylnaphthalene differ from 1-isopropylnaphthalene?

The 2-isomer carries the isopropyl group at the β position, which the 2-naphthol and 2,6-diisopropylnaphthalene routes require; the 1-isomer leads to off-target α-products, so its content should be limited in the specification.

How should 2-IPN be stored and handled?

Keep the container tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated place away from oxidizers. With a melting point near 14 °C it may solidify when cold; warm gently and mix until homogeneous before sampling.

Which documents are provided?

Each batch comes with a certificate of analysis, and the specification is available on request; KingPharm can provide an SDS as well.

What is the CAS number of 2-Isopropylnaphthalene (2-IPN)?
