2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate
CAS121711-42-0
2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate (CAS 121711-42-0), also known as biphenyloxyethyl methacrylate, is a monofunctional methacrylate monomer carrying a rigid biphenyl ether group. The aromatic biphenyl unit raises the refractive index of cured resins, making it a building block for UV-curable optical materials, lenses and coatings. KingPharm supplies 2-(4-phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate for R&D and production with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description
2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate (C18H18O3, MW 282.3) consists of a methacrylate group linked through an ethylene oxide spacer to a 4-biphenylyl ether. It is a monofunctional monomer used in free-radical, especially UV-initiated, polymerization.
During curing the methacrylate double bond enters the polymer backbone, while the pendant biphenyl group remains as a side chain. The highly polarizable, conjugated biphenyl unit increases the refractive index and rigidity of the network; patent literature describes biphenyloxy mono- and di(meth)acrylate compositions that cure rapidly under UV light into transparent, high-refractive-index resins.
Compared with phenoxyethyl methacrylate, the additional phenyl ring gives a higher aromatic content per molecule, so less monomer is needed to reach a target refractive index. As a monofunctional monomer it can also act as a reactive diluent, adjusting viscosity and crosslink density in multifunctional acrylate formulations.
For procurement, specify purity (HPLC or GC), stabilizer type and content, color, and acid value or residual methacrylic acid where relevant to optical clarity. KingPharm provides a batch-specific COA; specification and SDS are available on request.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does it compare with phenoxyethyl methacrylate?
The extra phenyl ring gives a higher aromatic content, so it raises refractive index more efficiently, with a more rigid side group.
Can it be used as a reactive diluent?
Yes. As a monofunctional methacrylate it can reduce crosslink density and adjust viscosity while keeping the refractive index of the formulation high.
How should it be stored?
Keep tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat, light and radical initiators to prevent premature polymerization; if stabilized with a phenolic inhibitor, store under air rather than inert gas.
What is the CAS number of 2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate?
The CAS Registry Number of 2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate is 121711-42-0.
What is the molecular formula and molecular weight of 2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate?
The molecular formula of 2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate is C18H18O3, and its molecular weight is 282.33 g/mol.
What is 2-(4-Phenylphenoxy)ethyl methacrylate used for?
Its biphenyl side group makes it a refractive-index-raising monomer in UV-curable optical formulations.
