3-Carene

CAS13466-78-9

3-Carene (delta-3-carene, CAS 13466-78-9) is a bicyclic monoterpene hydrocarbon found in turpentine and many essential oils. It has a sweet, citrus-pine odor and a strained cyclopropane ring fused to a cyclohexene, which makes it both a fragrance ingredient and a reactive starting material for terpene chemistry. KingPharm supplies 3-Carene for research and manufacturing, with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description

3-Carene (3,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[4.1.0]hept-3-ene, C10H16) is a monoterpene hydrocarbon obtained mainly by fractional distillation of turpentine. It is a colorless liquid that is practically insoluble in water and miscible with common organic solvents.

Its chemistry is driven by the trisubstituted double bond and the strained gem-dimethylcyclopropane ring. The double bond undergoes epoxidation, hydroboration and oxidation, while acid or thermal conditions can open or rearrange the cyclopropane ring, giving access to other p-menthane and bicyclic terpene skeletons.

Compared with alpha-pinene and limonene, 3-Carene offers a different ring system and odor profile, so it is used where a carane skeleton or its specific citrus-pine note is required rather than as a general terpene solvent.

Key purchasing points are assay by GC, the content of other terpenes such as alpha-pinene and limonene, and whether a stabilizer is added. Because 3-Carene autoxidizes in air, packaging under inert gas and storage conditions should be confirmed for each lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 3-Carene and alpha-pinene?

Both are C10H16 bicyclic monoterpenes from turpentine, but 3-Carene has a cyclopropane-fused carane skeleton while alpha-pinene has a cyclobutane-fused pinane skeleton, so they give different reaction products and odor profiles.

Is 13466-78-9 the same as (+)-3-Carene?
