Propellant Stabilizer

2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA)

CAS119-75-5

2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA, CAS 119-75-5) is a red crystalline nitro-substituted diphenylamine used mainly as a stabilizer in nitrocellulose- and nitroglycerin-based double-base propellants, where it binds the nitrogen oxides released as nitrate esters slowly decompose. It also serves as a dye intermediate and an analytical reference compound. KingPharm supplies 2-NDPA for research and production use with a batch-specific certificate of analysis.

Product Description

2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA, C12H10N2O2, MW 214.22) is a diphenylamine bearing a nitro group ortho to the bridging NH. It is a red solid with a reported melting point of 74–76 °C, practically insoluble in water and slightly soluble in chloroform, DMSO and methanol.

Nitrate esters such as nitrocellulose and nitroglycerin release nitrogen oxides as they age, and these oxides accelerate further decomposition. 2-NDPA reacts with NO2 and nitrous acid to form stable nitroso and nitro derivatives, removing the autocatalytic species and slowing propellant degradation. In formulations it is typically used at 1–2%; higher levels impair ballistic properties.

Compared with diphenylamine (DPA), the electron-withdrawing nitro group makes 2-NDPA a weaker base. This matters because strongly basic amine stabilizers can promote saponification of nitrate ester groups, so 2-NDPA is widely used in double-base and triple-base propellants that contain nitroglycerin.

For procurement, check assay, melting range and content of isomeric nitrodiphenylamines and residual diphenylamine, since these affect stabilizer performance and the baseline of depletion monitoring. KingPharm provides a specification and a batch-specific certificate of analysis with each lot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does 2-NDPA differ from diphenylamine (DPA) as a stabilizer?

Both bind nitrogen oxides, but the nitro group makes 2-NDPA a weaker base, which lowers the risk of promoting nitrate ester saponification. 2-NDPA is therefore widely used in nitroglycerin-containing double-base and triple-base propellants, while DPA is common in single-base powders.

How much 2-NDPA is used, and how is it monitored?

Typical loadings are 1–2% of the propellant. Because the stabilizer is consumed as the propellant ages, its remaining content is checked periodically; closer monitoring is generally applied below about 0.5%, and disposal is considered below about 0.2%.

How should 2-NDPA be stored?

Keep in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place, protected from light and away from strong oxidizers and strong acids.

What is the CAS number of 2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA)?

The CAS Registry Number of 2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA) is 119-75-5. 2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA) is also known as 2-Nitrodiphenylamine; 2-Nitro-N-Phenylbenzenamine; N-(2-Nitrophenyl)-N-Phenylamine.

What is the molecular formula and molecular weight of 2-Nitrodiphenylamine (2-NDPA)?
